Home Is Where Your Mail Goes

The Goshen Post Office closed this past spring with little fanfare. In fact, we weren't even told about it until after it happened. One day we could walk across the street and get our mail, and the next day we had to either drive several miles up the road, or get a mailbox.

When we moved into our house fifteen years ago, we opted for a PO box, rather than a mailbox. It seemed easy enough since the post office was next door. Our mailing address was listed as Goshen, NJ. Our street address for services like FEDEX and UPS were also listed as Goshen. Goshen was where we lived. Or so we thought.

Now that Goshen no longer has a post office, apparently we live in Cape May Court House. At least according to the United States Postal Service. When we moved in, we lived on Route 47. Now we've been told we live on North Delsea Drive. It's most disconcerting.

In one single day our home was moved to a different street, in a different town.

Jules+Mike | Wedding

My baby girl got married on October 15, 2011 to a wonderful guy named Mike. I insisted on shooting the wedding myself, which was a lot more stressful than I anticipated, but in the end, I'm happy I did. Here are a few of the selects. For the record, these are just shots I happened to like, and do not represent all the important people who were there very well. Don't take this personally if you don't see yourself here. You'll notice there are no photos of me either.

Self Portrait

Actually, it just occurred to me that I named this self portrait, when what I meant was it was a portrait of me. Actually, D. Matthew Smith took the portrait.

Bikers In Wildwood, NJ

Spent the morning working, then met up a friend, Kurt Kelly, and we headed over to Wildwood, NJ to experience the Roar To The Shore, a big biker weekend. It was a scene for sure. Apparently not nearly as big as it used to be, but still a whole lot of bikers in one place. Kurt and I walked around all afternoon and into the night, talking to people and taking their pictures. In this environment, you ask before you take a picture, and guys wearing colors, you don't even ask. Most said yes and were happy to do it.

Hurricane Irene

The Friday before Hurricane Irene was set to hit Cape May County, we'd been given a mandatory evacuation order for 8am, so of course we got in the car, with surfboards and cameras in tow, and headed over to the islands to make sure we could get on in case they closed the bridges at 8am. In the end, they didn't close the island to incoming traffic until 5pm. We spent the morning, and a beautiful morning it was too (blue sky, soft breeze), boarding up some homes of friends and clients. Then the boys got in the water. Ironically, there was almost no swell as the storm was still much too far south at this point.

21st Brendan Borek Surf Memorial | Short Documentary

Saturday, August 20th, the 21st Annual Brendan Borek Surf Memorial was held at 30th Street in Avalon, NJ. One of the largest amateur surf contests on the East Coast, The Brendan Borek attracts thousands of people and is always a special day.

This film was concepted, filmed and edited by David Todd McCarty in conjunction with Hopping Frog Studios on two Canon DSLRs. For more information, including the music selections, see the end credits.

A special thanks to Mike Meyer who not only runs a great show, but is always so eager to help.

Brendan's Fund
Brendan Borek loved life, and life it seemed, loved Brendan. An avid surfer, gifted artist, and an agile soccer player, his teenage years mirrored life at its fullest.

Diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma (cancer of the bone) at 16, he vied against death with courage and dignity until the disease claimed him in December 1991.

Because Brendan touched the hearts of many, the Brendan Borek High Tides Memorial Fund, Inc. (Brendan’s Fund) was established in 1992 by his family and friends.

CityLoft Event Video

This video was produced to introduce a fashion show as part of a VIP event for the Grand Opening of CityLoft, a pop-up retail concept by Somerset Collection in downtown Detroit. In essence, the TV spot was a shortened version of this.
